What's Happening with Conservatives and the GOP
1. Carl Cameron of FOXNews.com reported that the nation’s most influential conservative leaders have signed the Mount Vernon Statement re-committing themselves to the principles of constitutional conservatism.
In the works since last summer, the Mount Vernon Statement was signed on the eve of the annual Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC). The ceremony took place in the library of George Washington’s Mount Vernon Estate.
One of the 18 conservative leaders who signed the document, Richard Viguerie, Chairman of ConservativeHQ.com, said in a statement:
“I feel it’s a good first step, and I applaud those conservatives who have provided the leadership to produce this statement of conservative principles…Hopefully, the Mount Vernon Statement will draw a line to clearly separate the principled conservatives from the majority of Washington politicians (Republican and Democratic) who want to continue to expand the reach, power, control, and influence of government at all levels.”
The Mount Vernon Statement has also been signed so far by 7,500 grassroots citizens.
2. Republicans now have a 9-point lead in the race for Congress, the latest Rasmussen Reports reveals.
If the elections were held today, the GOP would win 45% to 36% for the Democrats. The 19% who say they are undecided would probably not vote in this non-presidential race, thereby resulting in a likely 55.6% to 44.4% Republican victory.
