What's happening with Seniors Benefits

1. Democratic platform seriously distorts Senator McCain on Social Security.  The 2008 Democratic National Platform states, "We reject the notion of the presumptive Republican nominee that Social Security is a disgrace; we believe that it is indispensable."

That statement seriously distorts what Senator John McCain (R-AZ) actually said about Social Security.

Asked by a young woman in Portsmouth, Ohio if she would ever receive her Social Security benefits, Senator McCain replied that it was unlikely "unless we fix it."  He said the continued raid of the Social Security Trust Fund was "a disgrace."

At first, Democrats strongly defended the use of Social Security surpluses for non-Social Security purposes.  Now, in their official platform, they have taken what Senator McCain said and twisted the meaning beyond recognition.

There is an enormous difference between deploring the misuse of Social Security surpluses and deploring the Social Security retirement program.

2. Democrats criticize raid of corporate pensions.  The 2008 Democratic National Platform states:

"We will ensure all employees who have company pensions receive annual disclosures about their pension fund's investments, including full details about which projects have been invested in, the performance of those investments and appropriate details about probable future investments strategies. We also will reform corporate bankruptcy laws so that workers' retirements are a priority for funding and workers are not left with worthless IOU's after years of service."

However, the Democratic platform says nothing about the $2.363 trillion in non-negotiable IOUs in the Social Security Trust Fund.

Inexplicably, the platform says, "We recognize that Social Security is not in crisis." and adds, "We will develop new retirement plans and pension protections that will give Americans a secure, portable way to save for retirement."

3.  Excerpts from the 2008 Democratic National Platform on Medicare:

"We will repeal the prohibition on negotiating prescription drug prices, ban drug companies from paying generic producers to refrain from entering drug markets, and eliminate drug company interference with generic competition-and we will dedicate all of the savings from these measures towards closing the donut hole.

"We will address the challenges that older Americans who are not yet eligible for Medicare face in finding affordable and quality health insurance."

4.  Democrats propose no taxes on seniors with incomes of less than $50,000:

"Finally, we will eliminate all federal income taxes for seniors making less than $50,000 per year. Lower- and middle-income seniors already have to worry about high health care and energy costs; they should not have to worry about tax burdens as well."
