1. In an article in the Washington Times, Richard A. Viguerie urges conservatives to "cease looking to Republican politicians for leadership" and says in an article in the Los Angeles Times the "GOP Needs New Management but Old Principles."
Viguerie, the Chairman of ConservativeHQ.com, writes in the May 13 Washington Times:
"Republican politicians have failed conservatives, the GOP itself and America. We're heading down the tracks to socialism or worse, with the GOP as caboose.
"Sadly, too many conservative leaders either blindly supported former President George W. Bush, Karl Rove, and congressional Republicans or were silent as big-government politicians abandoned conservative principles and massively expanded government.
"Conservatives should be under no illusions about the massive challenge ahead of us. We face a very popular President Obama, with a radical left-wing agenda designed to punish and silence all opposition, and at taxpayer expense. Mr. Obama and the Democrats have available massive financial revenues, and Republican opponents are leaderless, dispirited, confused and without an agenda or principles.
"Leadership starts with each of us."
The May 10 Los Angeles Times contains another article by Viguerie, which states in part:
"Two major debates face conservative Republicans about the future of the party. The first, rekindled by Sen. Arlen Specter's party switch, is whether the GOP should move further leftward. The second is whether conservatives should tone down their advocacy on social issues. History is on the side of outspoken conservatives in both debates.
"Republicans can try smoke and mirrors, but they really need new leaders who will reverse the big-government policies of Bush 43 and congressional Republicans, and actually articulate and move a conservative agenda forward.
"Conservatives should no longer look to Republican politicians for leadership, and should assume the role of leading the opposition to Obama and the Democrats. We believe we have a party and a country to save, and the GOP establishment is in our way."
