What's Happening with Conservatives and the GOP
1. Poll: Bush's biggest mistake was spending and deficits. ConservativeHQ.com at http://conservativehq.com/active-polls/ asked readers what President Bush's biggest mistake was. As of January 22, the results were: 32% Big spending and enormous deficits throughout his presidency 2. McCain campaign manager blames conservative talk show hosts for election loss. Rick Davis, in an interview with the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), said Republicans lost key states with high concentration of Hispanic voters because of the immigration issue: "We didn't successfully reach out to them. I mean, but you look at the leadership John McCain gave, which is counter to the direction that the party was headed, when you have the Rush Limbaughs of the world, who, you know, literally almost feed the nativist attitude toward immigration reform. What do you think the Hispanic voter, the Latino voter, is going to remember? They're going to remember the attacks, not the efforts by people like John McCain to try and reform." For several years before the 2008 election, Limbaugh and other conservative talk show hosts strongly opposed Senator McCain's plan for amnesty for illegal aliens. McCain subsequently modified his proposal to make it more difficult for illegal aliens to become citizens. 3. McCain aide Carly Fiorina again attacks Sarah Palin. In another interview on BBC, Fiorina, a surrogate for John McCain, said that the GOP "has to be broader than Sarah Palin's set of convictions." During the 2008 campaign, Fiorina said that Governor Palin did not have the experience to run a major corporation like Hewlett Packard. Fiorina had once been CEO of Hewlett Packard but was fired after the the market value of the company dropped by over half and the company incurred heavy job losses. Before Palin was named as the vice presidential candidate, Fiorina was frequently mentioned as a possiblity for McCain's VP. Meanwhile, in an interview with the Fox News Channel, McCain was asked if he thought Palin could be president. He replied, ""Sure, sure. But I'd also like to point out that it's very early in this whole season." McCain, who said he would not run again for president, mentioned as other possible candidates Governors Bobby Jindal of Louisiana, Jon Huntsman of Utah, Tim Pawlenty of Minnesota, and Mark Sanford of South Carolina. Palin, who was named as Conservative of the Year by Human Events and leads in all polls for the Republican presidential nomination in 2012, reflected on her race for vice president. She said that if she could do the campaign over again, she would be more independent of the McCain advisers. "If I were giving advice to myself back on the day my candidacy was announced, I'd say, ‘Tell the (McCain) campaign that you'll be calling some of the shots. Don't just assume that they know you well enough to make all your decisions for you'," she said.
