What's Happening with Conservatives and the GOP

1. The next 2 to 4 years could be a nightmare for conservatives-if they let the Democrats run over them.

With a new President who had the most liberal voting record of all 100 Senators and with a House and Senate both controlled by strong liberal majorities, conservatives may be unable to stop any legislation that the Left really wants enacted into law.

With Senator Norm Coleman the probable loser in Minnesota, Republicans will have only 41 seats.  While that is theoretically enough to sustain a filibuster against liberal legislation, in fact, it is not

Republicans Arlen Specter from Pennsylvania and Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe, both from Maine, had Congressional vote ratings from the American Conservative Union (ACU) of 40%, 36%, and 28% respectively in 2007, the latest year rated.  It is almost certain that at least one of these three will vote with the Democrats to invoke cloture against conservative filibusters.

The most conservative Senate Democrat is Mary Landrieu of Louisiana, who had an ACU rating of only 40%, followed by Ben Nelson of Nebraska at 32%, and Max Baucus of Montana at 20%.

It is unlikely conservatives could pick up enough Democrats to compensate for the defections of Republican Senators Specter, Collins, and Snowe.

The only hope is for conservatives to organize as an independent Third Force, says Richard Viguerie, Chairman of ConservativeHQ.com.  That's what conservatives did during the Carter Administration, when Democrats had similarly high majorities in both chambers of Congress.  By activating the grassroots, conservatives stalled much of Jimmy Carter's agenda.

"We did it then," says Viguerie, "and we can do it again."

Meanwhile, what do conservatives fear the most from the Obama Administration?

The website ConservativeHQ.com conducted an online poll at http://conservativehq.com/active-polls  As of December 23, the top five results were:

24%    Appointment and confirmation of liberal judges to federal courts.
10%    The Freedom of Choice Act, to wipe out state restrictions on abortions.
10%    Enormous increases in federal spending and even greater deficits.
10%    Restoration of the Fairness Doctrine, to effectively end talk radio programs.
8%    Wide-open borders and amnesty for illegal aliens.

2. The Second Amendment is one area where conservatives could prevail.

The National Rifle Association is one of the capital's toughest lobbies, and millions of heartland Democrats are strongly in favor of gun rights.  President-elect Obama knows that, and the Independent Institute wants to make sure he gets the message.  They are seeking to promote a surge of sales for Stephen Halbrook's The Founders' Second Amendment.

The goal is to get Halbrook's pro-gun rights book on the New York Times and Amazon.com bestseller lists right before the Inauguration.  For the full story go to http://www.secondamendmentbook.com/.
