What's Happening with Conservatives and the GOP
1. Governor Palin campaigning for Senator Chambliss in Georgia runoff. Governor Sarah Palin will speak at a series of rallies throughout the state in support of conservative Senator Saxby Chambliss (R-GA) the day before the December 2 runoff election against liberal Democrat Jim Martin.
The election is likely to determine if Republicans will have enough members in the Senate to sustain a filibuster against a plethora of liberal legislation. It takes 60 votes to invoke cloture, so if the GOP has at least 41 senators, there is a chance that some liberal bills might not be passed.
Barack Obama has made radio commercials and recorded robo-phone calls in support of Martin.
2. New TV ad thanks Sarah Palin. Our Country Deserves Better PAC has received $2 million in donations for the ads, which will run in Alaska and nationally on cable TV channels.
"We wanted to give Sarah Palin the reassurance that, despite the critics, Americans by and large appreciated her service and want her to continue to be a voice," said PAC spokesman Sal Russo.
A video of the TV ad is online at http://www.ourcountrydeservesbetter.com/
3. Viguerie forecast 2006 and 2008 GOP defeats and describes road back.
Richard A. Viguerie's 2006 book Conservatives Betrayed: How George W. Bush and Other Big Government Republicans Hijacked the Conservative Cause was one of the earliest assaults on Big Government Republicanism--the philosophy that wrecked the economy, ruined the GOP "brand," and brought the Democrats to power.
Since the book was published, its central argument--that excessive federal spending and enormous deficits would be a disaster for the GOP and for the country--has been proven correct.
Viguerie urges conservatives to become a Third Force (but not a third party) by organizing numerous local issue-oriented organizations that are independent of the Republican and Democratic parties, and to work to influence public policies at the local, state, and federal levels.

4. House GOP Caucus continues to support earmarks. For the second year in a row, the House GOP Caucus has rejected even a limited moratorium on earmarks.
Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) and Representative Eric Cantor (R-VA) proposed a short-term moratorium on earmarks while a panel of Republicans devised a plan for permanent restrictions.
But Representative Todd Tiahrt (R-KS) defended the special projects that each Congressman can insert into appropriations bills and convinced a majority of the caucus to reject the Boehner-Cantor proposal. Many Republicans said they wanted to secure earmarks in the new stimulus package that is expected to be considered in January 2009.
