What's Happening with Conservatives and the GOP

Issue #103

by Art Kelly

1. A new Gallup Poll shows that conservatives are preferred over liberals in 49 of the 50 states.

Only in Rhode Island and the District of Columbia do more people consider themselves to be liberals than conservatives.

Even in the other most liberal states--Connecticut, Vermont, Massachusetts, Colorado, New York, Oregon, Washington, and New Jersey--conservatives outnumber liberals. However, self-described moderates beat both liberals and conservatives in these states.

Gallup found the most conservative states to be Wyoming, Mississippi, Utah, South Dakota, Alabama, North Dakota, Idaho, South Carolina, Oklahoma, Nebraska, and Louisiana.

“The 10 most conservative states have no fewer than 46% of their residents identifying as conservative. In contrast, the 10 most liberal states have a much lower threshold of 25% liberal identifiers in their states,” Jeffrey Jones of Gallup noted.

2. If the congressional elections were held today, Rasmussen Reports found the Republicans would win 46% to 38%, while the Gallup Poll says the GOP would win 48% to 43%.

Real Clear Politics lists the latest results from six different national surveys, which now all point to a Republican victory. The average of all these polls is Republicans 46.5%, Democrats 40.5%, and undecided 13%.

3. President Obama’s approval rating is 46% in both the latest Rasmussen and Gallup polls.

Rasmussen also measures intensity of approval and disapproval. Only 27% strongly approve of the President’s job performance, while 42% strongly disapprove, leaving Obama with a minus 15% rating.

Gallup takes a look at the breakdown of Obama’s ratings from blacks (88%), Hispanics (54%), and whites (38%).

Interestingly, the President’s 88% approval from blacks is identical to the rating he received from blacks in January 2009. Nothing the president has done has altered the support for him from blacks in the slightest.

However, Hispanic support for Obama declined by 20% since January 2009. Among whites, there has been a 24% decline in support for him.

4. In Florida, the collapse of both Democratic Senate candidates has benefited independent Charlie Crist, who leads Republican Marco Rubio in five our of six polls.

If Kendrick Meek defeats Jeff Greene in the August 24 Democratic primary, he would receive only 12% of the vote in the general election, according to the latest poll by the New York Times in conjunction with the University of South Florida Polytechnic in Lakeland.

Crist would get 41% and Rubio would pull in 30%. 17% are undecided.

If Greene is the Democratic nominee, he would garner 16%, Crist would receive 37% and Rubio would get 29%. 18% are undecided.

The results of the other polls are listed in Real Clear Politics.

At this point, it appears many Democrats have given up on their own candidates and are backing Crist.

5. The board of directors of the Western Conservative Political Action Conference (WCPAC) has announced that Richard Viguerie, Chairman of ConservativeHQ.com, will receive their Lifetime Achievement Award.
