Issue #91

1. West Virginia Congressman Alan Mollohan, a so-called pro-life Democrat who voted for Obamacare, was defeated in the Democratic Primary by State Senator Mike Oliverio, who campaigned against the new health care law.
With all precincts reporting, the results were:
Oliverio 37,504 (55.8%)
Mollohan 29,716 (44.2%)
Mollohan has served in the U.S. House of Representatives since his election in 1982 and enjoyed strong support from the pro-life community. But his vote for Obamacare caused a major rupture of that support.
The Susan B. Anthony List (SBAL) was among the many pro-life groups who campaigned against Mollohan. The group spent $78,000 on television and radio ads educating voters about Mollohan’s vote for Obamacare.
Marjorie Dannenfelser, President of SBAL, said, "Just as Bart Stupak did, Congressman Mollohan now fully realizes that votes do have consequences. Mollohan's loss comes as a direct result of his vote for healthcare reform that included federal funding of abortion.
"We promised Rep. Mollohan and the other 'pro-life' Democrats that we would make their re-election incredibly painful if they voted 'yes' on the healthcare bill…This should be just another sign to 'pro-life' Democrats that voted for the healthcare bill that they will face the same consequences as Stupak and Mollohan."
Dannenfelser mentioned other alleged pro-life Democratic House members who voted for Obamacare, including Brad Ellsworth (IN), Steve Driehaus (OH), and Kathy Dahlkemper (PA).
If these members had voted against the bill, it would not have passed.
2. Coming just two weeks after the U.S. Supreme Court approved the seven-foot cross in the Mojave Desert, erected more than 70 years ago by World War I veterans, the cross has been stolen.
Joseph Infranco, Senior Counsel for the Alliance Defense Fund, said, “This is a cowardly and criminal act that dishonors heroes who have given their lives for our country. Those who deny our heritage and religious liberty will not succeed through vandalism under cover of darkness. What the ACLU could not accomplish in court, intolerant cowards are now trying to do through crime.”
Kelly Shackelford, President of the Liberty Institute, said, “This is an outrage, akin to desecrating people's graves. It's a disgraceful act on the selfless act of our veterans. We will not rest until this memorial is re-installed."
Charles Hill, National Commander of the American Legion, said, "This was never about one cross. It's about the right to honor our nation's veterans in a manner in which the overwhelming majority supports.”
A $25,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest of those responsible for the theft of the Mojave Desert Cross. Anyone with information about the crime is asked to call (760) 252-6120.
