What's happening with Christian Values
1. On behalf of the President, the Secretary of Health and Human Services, Kathleen Sebelius, has apparently ruled out any public funding of abortion in Obamacare.
In an interview on ABC's This Week with George Stephanopoulos, Sebelius said that no federal money "would go to fund abortion and the fact that he has come out firmly for insuring all Americans and saying that it's a moral issue as well as an economic issue."
Stephanopoulos then asked, "So you are saying that he will go beyond what we have seen in the House and explicitly rule out any public funding for abortion?"
Sebelius replied, "Well that's exactly what the President said and that's what he intends that the bill he signs will do."
Whether this is a new position or just a reiteration of Obama's previous claim in his nationally televised speech is not clear. In the address to a joint session of Congress, the President said, "Under our plan, no federal dollars will be used to fund abortions."
Immediately after the speech, the Legislative Director of the National Right to Life Committee, Douglas Johnson, said Obama's contention was "absurd on its face, a political hoax. The reality is that the Obama-backed House bill would explicitly authorize the federal government insurance plan to pay for elective abortions and would explicitly authorize subsidies for private abortion insurance-all with federal dollars."
In response to the new statement from Sebelius, Johnson said, "For months, the President, his staff, and his congressional allies have misrepresented actual language in their bills that would result in government funding of elective abortions. The latest statements by Mr. Obama and Ms. Sebelius are most likely a continuation of their strategy of denial, evasion, and distortion. We say, watch what they do, not what they say."
However, Bill Donohue, President of the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights, was willing to give Sebelius and Obama the benefit of a doubt.
"It is easy to be skeptical, given that both President Obama and Secretary Sebelius are rabid supporters of abortion-on-demand, but fairness dictates that we take both of them at their word," Donohue said.
"So fine, let's see what happens. One thing is for sure: After what Obama and Sebelius have recently said, there is no more wiggle room left on this issue. They have both made declarative, straight-up statements, leaving no room for caveats of any kind," he said.
2. The American Family Association (AFA) and the American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ) both believe Obamacare would make Planned Parenthood eligible to run federal-managed health clinics in public schools.
ACLJ states that "the legislation leaves wide open the possibility that Planned Parenthood's federally-funded school-based health clinics would be permitted to provide abortion services."
AFA says "HR 3200 will authorize Planned Parenthood, as a sponsoring facility, to run a clinic during school hours on the grounds of public schools, with absolutely no accountability either to parents or school administrators."
