What's happening with Christian Values
1. The U.S. Navy has removed its restrictions on religious speech on its Navy for Moms website.
The change is in response to a letter that Liberty Counsel sent to the Secretary of the Navy, Ray Mabus, demanding an end to religious discrimination and reinstatement of users' free speech rights on the website.
In its response, Admiral J. F. Kilkenny wrote, "I have instructed my staff to remove the current restrictions on religious and political debate. The goal of the revised guidelines is to allow for more open discussion without compromising the purpose of the website"
NavyForMoms.com was set up by the Navy to provide support and a means of communication for mothers and other loved ones of current and potential sailors.
A subgroup, Christian Chat, was established on the website, but a website administrator informed the group that it could not use the name "Christian Chat." The administrator said such blatantly religious speech was too divisive for a public forum. The Navy for Moms guidelines were also revised to prohibit the posting of religious discussions.
Those restrictions have now been removed, and the Christian Chat group is free to retain its name.
Mathew D. Staver, Founder of Liberty Counsel and Dean of Liberty University School of Law, commented, "We applaud the Navy for responding by removing restrictions on religious speech. To forbid ‘Christian Chat' as a chat forum for Navy Moms, under the notion that the name is too divisive for a public forum, was absurd. About 90 percent of Americans profess belief in God, and the majority of them are Christian. Of all places, religious freedom must be respected in our armed services."
2. The Family Research Council (FRC) has launched a television ad opposing the government takeover of health care.
Tony Perkins, President of FRC Action, the legislative action arm of FRC, unveiled a new TV ad that will run in five key states-Pennsylvania, Arkansas, Alaska, Louisiana, and Nebraska.
The ad explains the two key threats of Obamacare: rationing and taxpayer funded abortions. Patients, particularly the elderly, will face denial of vital treatments. At the same time, all taxpayers will be forced to pay for abortions.
The ad urges opposition to the Democratic health care plan that will deny care to seniors and deny life to unborn children.
Perkins warns, "In a world of health care rationing, the elderly, the handicapped and the frail are the most likely to lose their lives because care was delayed or denied. President Obama's rationing would mean that you and I could be denied basic care. This is what the White House and Congress mean when they say they will cut costs. It means cutting off your access to health care services."
