A Test of Representation

One of the most glorified mantras of the American Revolution is "No Taxation Without Representation." Now, more than 200 years after the War for Independence, are Americans still represented by their Congressmen?

A test of this representation is looming as Obama and Congress look to give more than $20 billion in additional loans to American automakers.

A new poll conducted by Gallup reveals that close to three-fourths of Americans oppose the move, yet, it's almost certain that Congress will give these loans—backed with taxpayer money—to the auto companies again.

Does this count as representation?

Obama has said that he doesn't support rewarding the bad decision of auto execs and, in the same breath, says that we can't let these companies go bankrupt. But, when the vast majority of Americans oppose giving more money to the auto companies, shouldn't this be a message to our representatives to cancel future loans and recall what's already been doled-out?

After all, it is the taxpayer's money.
