What's happening with Seniors Benefits

In his nationwide speech on health care, President Obama attempted to convince seniors that his plan would not be harmful to them.

"I want to speak directly to seniors for a moment, because Medicare is another issue that's been subjected to demagoguery and distortion during the course of this debate," he said.

Most of the money for Obamacare would come from cuts in Medicare and Medicaid over the next decade-at least $500 billion, very possibly much more.

"Reducing the waste and inefficiency in Medicare and Medicaid will pay for most of this plan,"  Obama claimed.  "And that's why not a dollar of the Medicare trust fund will be used to pay for this plan."

His statement about the Medicare Trust Fund is true.  The fund is almost exhausted and there is no money available in it.  Like Social Security, Medicare surpluses were raided for many years to pay for the general operations of the federal government.  Now the Trust Fund is empty, except for IOUs from the government to itself.

As for the President's far-fetched contention that Obamacare could be financed by reducing the waste and fraud in Medicare and Medicare, that conflicts with his previous announced intention to reduce spending on these programs.

In a March 24 news conference, Obama said, "There's been a lot of talk about entitlements in Medicare and Medicaid. The biggest problem we have long term is Medicare and Medicaid."

And on April 28, he told the New York Times, "The chronically ill and those toward the end of their lives are accounting for potentially 80 percent of the total health care bill out here.  There is going to have to be a very difficult democratic conversation that takes place."

The President harshly attacked those who have been pointing to the blatant encouragement of euthanasia contained in Obamacare.  He objected to "the claim made not just by radio and cable talk show hosts, but by prominent politicians, that we plan to set up panels of bureaucrats with the power to kill off senior citizens.  Now, such a charge would be laughable if it weren't so cynical and irresponsible.  It is a lie, plain and simple."

In fact, Sections 122, 123, 142, 203, 312, and 1145 in HR 3200 require rationing of health care.  A government committee will decide which treatments will be available under what circumstances.  A Health Choices Commissioner will determine what benefits everyone can receive.  Expensive diagnostic tests, such as MRIs and CT scans, will be strictly limited for everyone.

Even more ominous, Section 1233, Advance Care Planning Consultation, in HR 3200 requires all seniors to be given at least every five years a compulsory "explanation by the practitioner of the continuum of end-of-life services and supports available."

That consultation must contain an explanation why a directive to end their life would be "beneficial to the individual and the individual's family."  Subsection (5)(A) provides that "life sustaining treatment" can be ended by an order of any "health care professional as specified by the Secretary (of HHS).including a nurse practitioner or physician assistant."

Obamacare is the most anti-senior bill ever introduced in Congress, but the President's serious misstatements were not restricted to seniors issues.

His assurance that under his plan, "no federal dollars will be used to fund abortions," was called "absurd on its face, a political hoax" by Douglas Johnson, legislative director of the National Right to Life Committee (NRTLC).

"Barack Obama needs to learn that the mere repetition of a verbal formula does not change reality," Johnson said.

This reflects directly on the competence and integrity of the President.
